statement

My work is concerned with capturing split-second moments; the sense of a fleeting experience or memory, held indelibly in the swirling application of paint over a slick surface.  In the act of painting, I manipulate and slide translucent layers of oils over a shiny, slippy ground: dragging, softening, scratching, wiping back, my goal is to disturb the glassy glazes of oily colour until my desired image, and an accompanying sense of something, is secured.  I enjoy the challenge in creating the “souvenir” of a sensation: a suggested token that can spark a flicker of nostalgia in the viewer, alongside a potential narrative to explore. I try to give a photographic sensibility to my work, hoping, in turn, to further the sense of a snapshot of a forgotten experience : a chance encounter with an old keepsake, something found down the back of the sofa that jogs a memory one cant quite be sure of.
